WalMart Company – “There’ only 1 boss – the customer! And he’s powerful enough to fire anybody in this company… from the company chairman on down, just by deciding to spend his money anywhere else.” That’s how Sam Walton viewed his business. And one thing’s for sure… this much contributed to the success of his career and retail business. However, the whole story began in late 1940s when the guy became a key sales trainee at Des Moines, in an Iowa based J.C. Penney store. In spite of the sheer zeal to serve his customers, Walton wasn’t one of the ideal employees.

It was clear that he was more interested in making the customers happy. And this keenness was so massive that he sometimes let his ‘formal’ responsibilities like bookkeeping or paperwork fall apart. They guy was nearly fired who fuming told him that he was ‘unfit’ for the challenging career in retail stores. But Walton managed to keep his job, however, as he has enormous abilities as a salesman! After all, that’s what you expect from the father of Wal-Mart Company.

In the early 1940s, Walton got drafted into the US army. There, he was working in the military communications division, which was a wing of the then Army Intelligence Corps. So this genius salesman managed to stay in US throughout World Wart II. When he quit the army 3 years after that, Walton got married, and had his first child. So, he made up his mind to start a business so he could support his family. He invested the $5,000 he saved so far along with the $20,000 loan he got from his father in law, he managed buy a Ben Franklin variety store based in Newport of Arkansas. The legend was just in his late 20s then.

Long story short, he put many many hours at his store and implemented a special pricing strategy that lowered his prices amazingly below what the competitors charged. That’s how the business literally flew off. But his landlord wanted to buy this running success and Walton was forced to shut off. But he sort of had the formula of success and he started out again in rural Arkansas towns. Major successes were followed by massive expansions. And thus you have today’s WalMart Company.
