How to Win a Writing Contest

Do you need a writing degree to win a writing contest? Many people enter into contest or competitions, with the idea of winning, but not many of these contestants win because they’re skillful at how to win a writing contest. The following are just some guidelines to follow when planning on winning a writing contest. Read rules or instructions carefully if you wan to know how to win writing contests. Some rules can provide a great deal of ideas to not only writing a good article, but also gist on how to submit the work without errors or for it to stand out. The rules may also indicate the number of words, the formatting, and many others.

Writing skills: Due to the hurried manner in which the writer wants to submit the script, things such as spellings, sentence construction, grammar, tenses, etc are often ignored. Interestingly, judges do not just enjoy the stories they read, they actually look out for errors that have been made.

Another trick to know how to win a writing contest is the presentation of the work: Many people are very particular about the way scripts are presented. For those using computers, one font should be used through-out, unless an emphasis is been raised on something, this is usually in rare cases. The font size should be the checked. The presentation of the work also makes it appealing to the readers or judges. When deciding on the font, size, number of words or anything that has to do with the presentation, it is always helpful to refer to guidelines for submission or ask the organizers of the contest for further clarifications.

Characterization: when acts or actions do not suit what the writer is describing, for example a writer described someone as well-mannered, and later adds that the said character has insulted or done anything bad. Reasons why a said ‘mannered’ person behaved in bad way should be explained to clear readers doubt on the character of the person or to save yourself the time of having to convince judges (that is when called to come and justify the writing).

Stories should be real: Every story should have a beginning, middle (which sometimes or often serves as the heart of the story) and should have an ending. The theme of the writing should be clearly stated or be easily seen or noted by anyone who picks the writing. The theme will also be the pivot around which the writing will evolve.

Writing is one aspect and winning is another aspect of how to win writing contests so to win a writing contest, participant(s) can use the above tips for success.

  4. Dear Robert,
I read your essay and I was inspired by your interest in sharing your stories with others to gain some insight which they may never have pondered on before. Do you believe that is the motivation of every professional or amateur writer to share a thought or plot to convey an emotion or fact to persuade the reader to think their way? Well, just like a commercial or an advertisement, that is their purpose, even in fiction, especially in fiction. They present a dilemma and their solution and try to win you over to their way of thinking. Imagine a story where the author leaves the ending up to you…that would be unsatisfying, worse than if the ending clashed with your way of thinking. Just maybe the best thing a story can do is broaden our minds with new ways of thinking, what do you think?

  6. I was unaware of these writing contest opportunities where I myself have a lot of stories to share with the hope of maybe winning something would be more than welcomed. If you can send me any and all information containing to these Contests for writing articles for submission my email is ******yahoo.com. I feel that awarding a person for their writing ability of content can really be a blessing to that person who only wrote these personal stories originally for no monitory gain but for a thought for other people to maybe gain a insight maybe they never thought of or pondered on.
